I Can Imagine It For Us — Book Conversation
Description
Mai lives in Cairo and has never been to Palestine, the country from which her family was expelled in 1948. She is twenty-four when her estranged father calls — his health is failing, come to China, where he runs a business empire she knows nothing about. She goes hoping they will become close. Instead, the ghosts of the Nakba follow them both and a tragic death brings a whole new meaning to the word erasure. A layered and fragmented memoir, full of bitter tragedy and quiet grace.
Mai Serhan is a Palestinian writer based in Cairo and the author of Cairo: the undelivered letters. Her work explores identity, displacement and memory through language and hybrid forms. She holds a master's in creative writing from the University of Oxford.
